UNVEILING OF SCARBOROUGH’S NEW BATHING BELLE SCULPTURE
Scarborough’s latest piece of modern art
Guests staying at The Royal Hotel this week will have the chance to see the unveiling of Scarborough’s latest piece of modern art.
Scarborough’s newest sculpture, The Diving Belle which, symbolises the birth of Scarborough as the country’s first sea-bathing resort, will be unveiled at a ceremony in the town centre at 11.00am on Thursday 24th April 2008.
The Bathing Belle is the second of two public works of art commissioned by Scarborough Civic Society. The first statue being the Diving Belle, which was unveiled last May on the Lighthouse Pier. Money for the two statues was raised through public donations and grants from Yorkshire Forward, Scarborough Council and the Arts Council.
Guests staying at the Royal Hotel will be able to see the Bathing Belle, which will be put on the plinth outside Woolworths in Westborough which is just a short walk from the hotel, unveiled by Janet Jefferson, the mayor of Scarborough.
The two Belle sculptures represent two different times of growth and regeneration in Scarborough’s history. The Bathing Belle, in an 1890s bathing dress, represents the town from her beginning as a spa and then the UK’s first sea-bathing resort through to her Victorian heyday.
The Diving Belle is launching herself into the future at the beginning of the twenty-first century with the confidence the town is experiencing in its regeneration and renaissance as many new plans and developments unfold.
Guests staying at the Royal Hotel are within walking distance of both sculptures so why not take the opportunity to see these pieces of modern art whilst enjoying the other sights and delights of Scarborough.
