Scarborough’s Annual Pancake Olympics

The Royal Hotel’s staff got into the traditional Shrove Tuesday spirit by entering a team in Scarborough’s Annual Pancake Olympics.
The event organised by Scarborough Town Centre Management and Yorkshire Coast Radio, took place after the mayor had rung the Pancake Bell, which is hung at the junction of Westborough and North Street.
The traditional event took place on Tuesday in Aberdeen Walk and teams from local businesses and hotels from all around Scarborough competed for this year’s title. Hundreds of people took to the streets to watch the event, which featured several heats, semi-finals and final.
The Royal Hotel’s team finished first in their heat, whilst in the final the team were awarded a silver certificate for finishing in second place. A team from SVS Cleaning Services were crowned the overall winners.
The owner of SVS Cleaning Services, Michael Westlund, said he was shocked to have won the event with employee Kev Sharpe. He added:
“It is a really important event in Scarborough, which I think is shown by all of the businesses that take part and the number of people that come to watch. It was great fun and I’m really glad we did it.”
Twenty-two organisations were represented by 35 two-man relay teams in this years event and Scarborough’s 2010 Pancake Olympics was seen as a great success.
