BIG CHANGES ON WAY FOR HOTELS IN SCARBOROUGH

Is Travelodge set for Scarborough?

The Scarborough Evening News website reports today how one of Scarborough’s leading hotels could soon be under new ownership if a planned national takeover goes ahead.

The article describes a possible multi-million pound takeover deal involving leisure and corporate hotel giants Travelodge.

Greg Dawson, Travelodge director of communications, is quoted as saying: “We would very much like a hotel in Scarborough and are looking at a number of opportunities. The town attracts a good mix of both leisure and business travellers and has a great seaside tradition.”

The Scarborough hotel involved can not yet be revealed at this stage of the negotiations but an announcement is expected soon.

Travelodge is the UK’s fastest growing budget hotel chain and runs more than 330 hotels across the UK, Ireland and Spain, as well as planning to open 40 more hotels this year.

Originally Travelodge had been interested in building a hotel in Scarborough on the site of Boothby’s garage, adjacent to Soltz Bar at the corner of Vernon Road and Falconer’s Road, but lost out to rival hotel group Premier Inn. Formally known as Premier Travel Inn, the group have also been given the go-ahead to develop further accommodation in Scarborough in the shape of for a new 37-bedroom hotel at Scalby Manor.

Mark Pickering, Marketing Manager for Scarborough based English Rose Hotels, said, “Whilst we welcome the competition – as there’s no doubt that in the end, competition will end up improving the choice and services for visitors to the town – Travelodge hotels service a distinctly different market sector to us, catering predominantly for the budget market.”
