Scarborough with a population of over 50,000 is commonly regarded as the UK’s first seaside resort , now the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast it’s a great choice for a UK holiday or short break with a wide selection of quality hotels.
One of the town’s most striking features is its rocky headland, on top of which sits the 11th century ruins of Scarborough Castle, which was bombarded by the German warships in the First World War.Jutting out eastward into the North Sea, the headland splits Scarborough’s two sandy beaches, North Bay and South Bay, which are linked by Marine Drive, an extensive Victorian promenade, built around the base of the headland. Both bays have a wide range of local attractions, popular sandy beaches and numerous rock-pools at low tide.
South Bay
The South Bay was the site of the original early medieval settlement and the harbour, which forms the current Old Town, and remains one of the main focuses for tourism, with a sandy beach, cafes, amusements, arcades, theatres and entertainment facilities.
The harbour now boosts free Wifi, street lighting, seating areas , new pontoons and a pedestrian friendly promenade , the Scarborough harbour has recently been renovated and the place is now ideal for tourists.
North Bay
North Bay is definitely the more peaceful end of the resort, with its Blue Flag award winning beach it’s popular with families and couples alike.
North Bay is also home to Peasholm Park, which has recently been restored to its Japanese-themed best, complete with reconstructed pagoda. Over the summer holidays the Park plays hosts to ‘Naval Warfare ‘ a famous battle involving model boats which takes place in the lake at the parks center, it ends with a firework display and is a great day out.
The North side also has the North Bay railway a historic 20 gauge miniature railway operating since 1931 which runs ¾ of a mile The North Bay to the Scarborough Sea Life Centre.
Recently renovated and opened by her Majesty the Queen Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre is currently Europe’s largest located near the North Bay it hosts music events and entertainment.
South Cliff
The South Cliff Esplanade is situated above the historic Scarborough Spa and South Cliff Gardens and is slightly less well known amongst tourists. It boosts splendid Regency and Victorian terraces that are still intact and a mix of quality Scarborough hotels, the commanding views of the South Bay and the Old Town have been subject to iconic postcards of the town in the past.
ITV drama The Royal and it’s spin off series The Royal Today are filmed on Scarborough’s South Cliff and continue to be a success.
Scarborough Town Centre
The town centre is located approximately a quarter mile north-west of the harbour, where you will find the main transport links services, shopping, nightlife, town centre and Scarborough hotels.
The resorts centre provides a great choice of high street shops and boutiques. The Brunswick Centre is a prestigious all-weather shopping centre with a department store and thirty one other retail outlets. The centre is located in Scarborough’s pedestrianised shopping precinct, which, with the surrounding streets, has many individual boutiques, specialist shops and inviting cafes, restaurants and bars.

The great Scarborough pub run starts at the top of town at Lord Roseberry leading down to St Thomas Street home of Mist Bar, The Opera House Casino and Boleyn’s Nightclub.
If loud music and discos aren’t your cup of tea, then check out the Scarborough jazz festival held in September or take a stroll down to the Scarborough Spa, where orchestras play at this fantastic Victorian complex on the seafront in South Bay (an ideal venue to enjoy a dinner and dance).
For Family shows Scarborough is great whatever entertainment you are looking for the town won’t disappoint with variety, musicals, comedies and big name acts with plays and dramas making up a fantastic schedule of events for holidaymakers. If you’re into a more informal evening look out for Scarborough pub legend ‘Danny Wilde’ or any of the other pub acts that grace the town it’s all good fun and all the local pubs are a friendly and hospitable environment.
